Customer Reviews:
1 out of 5 stars Watch out! Doesn't get em all---at YOUR expense!   March 13, 2010

I have been a symantec customer for years - from the days of my old self-built 800MHz processor clone. I have a lot of experience with Norton products. Last year, I upgraded to Norton 360 for myself and my wife.

The first rub, was when I tried to opt out of the online backup system. I didn't care to have my personal files being stored who-knows-where, maintained by who-knows-who. It took a customer service call to find out how to opt out of that part of the app. I could live with tht hassle, although there needs to be an easier way for customers to opt out of unwanted portions of applications.

The BIG rub came two weeks ago, when I discovered the hard way, that Norton 360 ANTIVIRUS, does not catch the "XP Guardian" virus! Tell me again, what is an AV app supposed to do? Anyway, I had to contact their online assistance, and was "upgraqded" to their technician who can take over your PC (from India) to fix the problem. The tech I worked with was named Pramod. He worked diligently the whole time (approximately an hour and a half) and at the end, declared it fixed. He supplied we with a number for the unexpected event that I had to get back with customer service for a warranty (7 day) issue. This ADDITIONAL antivirus service cost me $139.99! (NOTE: I already paid full price for their antivirus application, and constantly keep the live updates up-to-date. This $139.99 is NEW expense.)

3 days later, the same symptoms literally popped up (a symptom of the XP Guardian) and I called their customer service with my warranty number. It too a half hour, just to get them to understand this was a recall based on a prior "fix". Finally, I was placed in a queue for 45 minutes before another person asked for all the information the first person asked for, and then THAT second person upgraded my problem to a tech. Another 45 minutes of so later, a tech named Mohammad assured me he would fix the problem (sounded like a script the first tech Pramod read from), and that this should not take more than 45 minutes. Sit back and watch him work.

I sat back and watched moments of activity as he took over remotely, my wife's computer. The moments of activity were separated by up to two and a half hours of absolutely nothing taking place. No processor activity, no mouse movement, NOTHING! After this incredible length of time OVE the "43 minutes or less", I got on MY computer which is next to my wife's, and got through to Symantec customer support, and asked the person to walk over to Mohammand's work station, and kick him to wake him up. Within 10 seconds, my wife's computer was busy as could be, with screens popping up, text being typed, other text being deleted...Mohammed was all of a sudden working!

Coincidence?

Meanwhile, I'm well past my bedtime for my day job in which I have to have my wits about me...and lack of sleep degrades my abilities by the minute!

I'm upset, Mohammed is trying to explain penny-antie BS that I already know about not to download unfamiliar sites, the dangers of posting PII material online...the usual junk you tell a newbie to computers. I explain it's very late in the USA and I have to go...If he's finished, close his apps, clean my desktop and restore everything he messed with please.

Another half hour, and he's still reading from his script, "If I have any further problems (which I should not) please use this "Priority" number for quicker service. I suggested that if the LAST prioity number I used results in similar service, I might be better off with just initiating a new call!

He apparently was multi-tasking with other peoples' problems while working on my wife's, and FORGOT about my wife's for over an hour...for a task he promised would take less than 45 minutes!

This is unacceptable customer service, and it comes as the ONLY choice from Symantec! It is inexcuseable! And has created a very dissatisfied customer---particularly since AI bought the entire package for their full price, then was charged an ADDITIONAL $139.99 for this service from India.

And on top of that, it did not fix the problem!!!!!!

I have demanded a full refund of both the customer service extra charge, as well as the price of the Norton 360. OBVIOUSLY it doesn't work as advertised! As expected, no one of any authority from Symantec has had the decency to contact me! Afterall, I'm looking for them to send ME money rather than the other way around.

In the time since this experience, I found an app that found, isolated, and quarantined the virus in question, plus found a sleeper trojan on MY computer! All free of charge for the scan, and half the price of Norton360, called Webroot. There are several choices for the level of services you want. It has caught things that Norton never caught, and fixed my wife's and my pcs without the hassle of having to get a tech from India to repair it!

Norton, you dropped the ball by not screening out XP Guardian. You dropped the ball by charging extra for a service that should have been taken care of with your original software. You dropped the ball by having incompetant technicians fooling around with my registry files (which Webroot ultimately fixed, BTW). You dropped the ball by having technicians promise completion times that were totally bogus. You dropped the ball by (apparently) having techs multi-task, letting me drop through the cracks for over an hour!

Face it Norton, you dropped the ball, it is no longer recoverable! I want my money back for the tech service...I want my money back for an application that doesn't fulfill it's primary mission as advertised, even with the constant live updates!

Perhaps you ONCE were the industry standard, but there's a new sherrif in town, called WEBROOT! That's who I'm going with from now on. Send me my refunds and I'm gong from your "services".

Anyone considering Norton or Norton360, consider my experiences and remember: There but for the grace of GOD, go I.

Stay away from NAV products, and particularly, their India customer services. They have no qualms about taking their whole day working with you, forgetting that their whole day, is YOUR overnight!

Norton/Symantec - I WANT MY MONEY BACK!

Who ever takes customer feedback will hear of your business paradigm...it stinks!
