5 out of 5 stars Fully customizable malware vaporizer   October 28, 2009

I used to be lukewarm to Norton. You know the drill: resource hog, etc. That was then. Forget the old Norton: since 2009 they have produced some of the leanest, fastest, meanest virus killing software on the market. This is what now makes me a proud owner of a Norton product. There was a time when having a Norton product on a machine was as bad as having an AOL account and using Altavista. Not anymore. I am a PC enthusiast, and I am so convinced this product is great that I never shy away from telling my PC enthusiast friends about it.

5 out of 5 stars Continuing excellenc plus new features   November 1, 2009

I am a very satisfied long time Norton security services customer. Norton puroducts are effective, esay to use, and now - esay to install. Norton Internet Security 2010 was the easiest to install version ever - I was done in less than 30 minutes, including checking all the settings to be sure they tranferred correctly. It is completely Windows 7 and Vista compatible.
That in itself is a real plus - I have hundreds of logins, with varying IDs and passwords. Trying to input them all again in a new program would be a nightmare! As soon as the program restated my computer, I was able to check and find them all in place in the Identity Safe, ready for easy access and automatic use.
Insight is a new feature, at least as it is now configured. It monitors your downloads, optimizations, and processor usage. It accesses Symantec's Community database of programs which they have examined for viruses, trojans, and other harmful programs and compares those results with the programs you have running on your computer, then reports the level of trust for each program. There are currently 70,500,000 such files.
My favorite Systemworks programs are also included - optimize. This and many other features are included in the new Performance segment of NIS.
The other very important feature to me is client integration, where email scanning (in- and outbound) is available for MS Outlook, Outlook Express, and Windows Mail.
If you don't have it, buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Easy to use, Dependable Norton   October 29, 2009

I tried out the 2010 version of the Norton Internet Security/multiple users (up to 3) security software.

I have traditionally used the Norton suite of security products over the last 7 years or so. I use it for my home PC and my laptop. I have never gotten a virus or had problems..I have read about several software packages that slow down people's computers or are hard to use..I have not had this problem with Norton, nor have I experienced any problems with this new version.

I would recommend that when you are renewing your subscription, you shop around if you are going to renew on line with Norton..sometimes it is cheaper to go to Amazon or a place like Costco and just buy the new version...

Norton Internet Security 2010 is a terrific product. My daughter is constantly on the Internet downloading new applications and I feel safe knowing that this product is in the background protecting my computer. I found it easy to install and it has not slowed my system down. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Best Norton Suite Yet   October 20, 2009
T. Swanson

Since Norton rebuilt their suite from the ground up with the 2009 version, I've been very happy with the product. The 2010 version seems to be a good follow up. These suites are first Norton products I've either used or tested in the last 12 years that haven't bogged down my system. The older versions were so bad, that I gave up on Norton for a number of years. Not only were the older versions resource hogs, they were very susceptible various malware, even ones written specifically for Norton products (and they would cripple Norton and create havoc on the rest of the system.) I've yet to see that happen with the newer generation of security suites (2009 - 2010.)

While I have worked on many systems besides my own, I am not qualified to grade and test the actual effectiveness of malware protection. I'll leave that up to folks like AV-Comparatives, V-B, the gentleman with PC Mag and the likes. However, I do feel somewhat privileged in sharing my observations due to the volume of PCs I see. While nothing may be perfect, there is no doubt Norton Internet Security 2010 is solid in all three major security areas - Spyware, AntiVirus (otherwise known as malware, along with some others,)and firewall. If one is an "expert" there are many configurable settings to choose from. However, I do not believe the "expert" crowd was the necessary intended target for this product, although it is fully capable of delivering the same results. No, this product was intended for the average to not-so-average typical home user. In this sense, there is no other product out there that can compare at the moment. The key strength, besides all the others, is the ease of use of this product, straight out of the box.

This is the first product in all my years that I can wholeheartedly recommend to my mom and know she isn't going to keep calling me due to pop ups or other questions(Comodo is great freeware, but, oh my, NEVER put it on the machine of a novice user!)It does everything automatically. It decides for you. It updates for you. It even runs scans for you. There are other benefits of this suite, but they are meaningless if the suite fails in any one of the Big 3 security areas. That has to be priority over other features. The good news is that the 2010 version does have a decent parental rights feature you can download as a free ad-on, something that has been missing in all other verisons, even the 2009.

Great software or bad, it doesn't matter if the user doesn't know how to use the product. It can be rendered useless. Once again, I use Comodo Firewall Pro as an example. It is excellent protection that is totally free, but difficult to use for most people. During install, it encourages stronger security options, but each pose more and more complex issues that no average user even understands. Furthermore, it gives tons of pop ups and answering wrong could let bad in or stop good from working, creating more frustration than ever. No such issues with Norton IS 2010.

Some people do not like to put Anti Virus or other security on their machines because they are behind a router, their Internet provider says they have security on their servers, or they are in a corporate environment. I disagree with all except a certain group in the corporate environment. As long as there are USB ports, Flash drives, external hard drives, shared optical disks, downloads, brilliant but rogue programmers, laptops that travel out of the safety of a home network into public wifi hotspots, your local machine is still at risk and needs security on it. It only takes once, and in this case, the opportunities are many. If your business uses something like Citrix, then you shouldn't even be shopping for a product like this. You are the exception I'm talking about.

There is a growing gap between free stuff and paid stuff. If not for performance, then ease of use. Even my favorite free AV solution just can't keep up since it is purposefully stripped down. My favorite free firewall is a pain to use, even for me at times. I simply can't recommend any freeware spyware protection on its own because they have too many security holes in the overall protection. Since many don't offer any kind of active guard as a freeware, that leaves the majority of the users prone to not keeping up with necessary updates. Even the good freebie antispywares seriously slow down boot up times, even with claims of improvements. It's nice they are out there and I've used them for years, but not any more. With a competent solution that makes everything too easy, I now pay.

One other note. AV alone is not enough. You need a suite that covers the Big 3 at a minimum. Norton's new suite is the best answer I've seen yet, few flaws and all. I've never been able to recommend a suite wholeheartedly because they'd have major flaws in one critical area or another, but this one is solid all around and super easy to use.

As for 30 minutes or so install, past versions have taken 2+ hours to install and do all updates! So, this is a big improvement for Norton, even if others can do so faster. The actual install, once the executable is selected, is actually very fast, about 5-10 minutes on average. That's pretty quick for an entire Norton suite.
